A casino is an establishment for certain types of gambling. It may also be combined with hotels, resorts, restaurants, retail shops, cruise ships or other tourist attractions. In modern usage, it is almost always an enclosed and specialized facility. Casinos are most commonly found in the United States, but they are also operated in other countries around the world.

There are three general categories of casino games: gaming machines, table games and random number games. Gaming machines are characterized by their ability to accept bets independent of skill by the player; they do not require a dealer and use automated decision-making processes. Table games, on the other hand, involve one or more players competing against each other and/or the house. These games are run by employees known as croupiers or dealers. Random number games generate winning combinations by selecting numbers based on a random process, such as those generated by computer programs.

Despite their reliance on luck and chance, casinos are generally designed to provide a unique and wholesome experience for patrons. They usually feature opulent suites, spas and fine dining in addition to the traditional roulette wheels and blackjack tables. Some of the most exclusive casinos in the world are located in Las Vegas, China, Monaco and Singapore. The glitzy Hotel Lisboa in Macau is perhaps the best-known example, with its exterior designed to look like a birdcage and its interior hosting a variety of top chefs and world-renowned wines.
