However, it’s generally believed to be a derivative of other games. Jonathan H. Green, a man from Mississippi, is the person who attached the word “Poker” to the game. He saw the game being played with two to four players and twenty cards. Although his description was sketchy, it has been attributed to the game he first observed on a riverboat.

The game can be played with as many as six to eight players. The ideal number is six to eight players. The pot is the sum of the bets made by all players in a single hand. The player with the highest-ranking poker hand (or “high hand”) wins the pot. If no other players call, he wins the pot. If you’re the only person to have a high-ranking poker hand, however, the odds are stacked against you.
