Improve Your Poker Hand Position by Learning to Read the Action of Other Players

Poker is a game of strategic thinking, calculation and decision making. It can also help you improve your concentration and memory, as it requires you to focus on the current situation of the game and potential future scenarios. It can also help you develop better discipline and patience as a result of the fact that it is a slow paced game.

Position

Generally speaking, the earlier in position you are at a table, the more risk you take on each hand by having to act first. However, a good player can make up for this disadvantage by learning to read the actions of other players. They will know when to bet and when to call based on their opponent’s tells. For example, if the person to your left raises preflop, you can say “call” or “I call” to match their bet and continue the hand.

You can also try to learn to spot “tells” – which are small non-verbal cues that reveal a player’s emotion and intention. This is important because if your opponent seems bored on the flop, for example, they may be trying to tell you that they have a weak hand or that they plan to bluff.
