Different Types of Poker

There are several different types of Poker, and it can be difficult to determine which one is best for you. Poker is a game of skill, strategy and luck. It has many variations, so you can play it in any way you’d like. Some versions are silly, such as Strip Poker. Others, like Holding cards behind your head, are best suited for child-free nights. Whatever your preference is, you’re bound to find a variation you enjoy.

In all variations of the game, betting intervals vary. Typically, one player is given the privilege or obligation to make the first bet. Each player must place into the pot an amount equal to the total of chips the player before them contributed to the pot. This player is known as the active player. After the initial betting round, however, all players in the game are required to put an ante into the pot. When a player folds, he or she forfeits their chance to win the pot.

Many early forms of the game have a seedy history. The word “poke” may have come from the game played by card hustlers, who used it to cheat unwitting opponents. However, the word “poker” came to be used for the game. In the 17th century, the word “poke” was used in French, and in German, the word pochen (pronounced ‘poker’) became a common name. The game spread throughout Europe, with French settlers bringing it to North America.
